ONE
“Ex-lovers and dead husbands”
Italian women were born to suffer. As Carla Ferrari’s widowed mother Mary often said; ‘Se non sei ancora sofferenza, non si respire.’ If you’re not suffering, you’re not breathing. Carla hated to agree, but since she broke up with Nick, she was barely sleeping, eating or breathing and she was suffering like a dog.
When P.I. Carla Ferrari placed Nick Calvi’s engagement ring back in the box, she knew she would never be with the only man she ever loved. She was devastated, but she had to get over it. After all, she was the owner of a private investigation business, people counted on her, and most of all, she was Italian.
Work was the only outlet she had for her grief. She threw herself into making Ferrari Private Investigations the best business of its kind in Boston. Business was booming. She and Nick solved the serial killings of three wealthy women a few months ago, and more people recognized her because of all of the positive press she received.
She was busy filling out paperwork when the phone rang. Before she could tell her assistant Deborah to hold all her calls, she passed the call through.
“Hello, this is Carla.”
“What, you don’t know how to use a phone? What do I have to do to get a call from my daughter, get kidnapped?”
“Hi, ma, sorry I didn’t call you last night. I was working late and I got home after ten and I didn’t want to wake you.”
“You wouldn’t have to wake me, Carla, because I never went to bed.”
“Ma, you stayed up all night?”
“Do we have a bad connection? Didn’t I just say I didn’t go to bed? No wonder you don’t call, you don’t listen when I tell you to call me. How am I supposed to put my head down when my daughter is probably getting shot in the chest by some maniac? You know, Carla, Cousin Joe still has a job waiting for you at the mortadella factory. All you got to do is say the word, and you can get a job like normal people.”
